Tummy time is when you place your baby on their stomach while they are awake and supervised. It might look simple, but it plays a key role in your baby’s growth. This blog explains why tummy time matters and how to introduce it safely at home.

Why Tummy Time Matters

Tummy time helps your baby develop strength in the neck, shoulders, and trunk. It also prevents flat spots on the head and supports motor skills like rolling over and crawling.

Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that babies who have regular tummy time gain better head control and physical development.

When to Start

Begin tummy time with your baby as soon as they come home from the hospital. Start with very short sessions of just 1 to 2 minutes. You can do this two to three times a day.

As your baby grows stronger, gradually increase tummy time until they can spend 20 to 30 minutes total per day by around 3 months.

How to Make Tummy Time Safe and Fun

  1. Always Supervise
Place your baby on a clean, flat surface. Stay within arm’s reach and never leave them alone.
  2. Comfort Matters
Lay your baby on a soft blanket or a clean floor. You can also place a small rolled towel under their chest to help them feel more comfortable.
  3. Be Patient
Your baby might resist tummy time at first. Start with a few minutes and increase gradually over the week.
  4. Join the Play
Get down on the floor and talk or sing to your baby. Mirrors, soft toys, or a colorful cloth in front of them can keep them engaged.
  5. Timing Is Important
Avoid doing tummy time right after a heavy feed. Wait 20 to 30 minutes after eating to reduce fussiness or spit up.
  6. Add Variety Safely
Once your baby is stronger, you can include floor play on a playmat or place them over your lap with their chest supported by your legs. Just keep it supervised.

Troubleshooting

  • If your baby cries, start with shorter sessions and slowly increase time.
  • If they resist, try different times of the day, such as after a diaper change.
  • If flat spots on their head are visible, ask your paediatrician for additional repositioning tips.

Tummy Time and Indian Homes

Many Indian parents place their babies to sleep on their backs to reduce SIDS risk. Tummy time on the floor is a great complement. It is also a chance for bonding during playtime while keeping your baby close. This timing makes it easier to supervise, especially when space at home is limited.
